Writing: In writer’s workshop we have been working on writing realistic fiction stories. All of our stories need to have a problem and solution. Some second graders have been basing stories on things that have really happened to them and changing the story slightly and others are coming up with their own realistic fiction ideas. Second graders are working on continuing to add detail, but making sure that the details are related to the story and the problem and solution.
Math: We have finished up our unit on graphing. In this unit we learned about three different types of graphs: picture graphs, bar graphs, and line plots. Students felt very successful with this unit and enjoyed making different types of graphs. They also made their own survey question and created a graph to represent the data they collected. We have now moved on to studying geometry and two dimensional shapes. We have learned the rule that in a polygon, the number of sides equals the number of angels. The shape names we have learned are triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, and hexagons. We used several materials such as geoboards and wikki stix to create shapes before practicing drawing shapes using rulers.
Second Step: In Second Step we have continued to learn strategies for handling situations involving bullying behavior. We learned that a bystander is someone who witnesses bullying and that as a bystander, we can help the person that is being bullied. I continued to reinforce the importance of involving a teacher and also letting a trusted adult know in that moment.
Conversation Starters:
Tell me about one of the realistic fiction stories you wrote this week. Who are the characters? What is the problem? How does the problem get solved?
What makes a shape a polygon? What is an example of a polygon?
How did you make one magnet float above another magnet?
