Writing: In writing we have been working on writing mysteries. I am loving the creativity that kids are using to write these stories! We have worked on using details to write about the detective and the setting. We talked about the importance of clues that lead to suspects and how eyewitnesses can help. Many students also added a red herring to their mystery- a clue that confuses and misleads the detective. We will not have a formal celebration of this unit so some of your children’s stories will be sent home next week.
Math: Everyone is so excited to be learning about multiplication and division. We built our own multiplication tables this week. We learned how to divide by making equivalent groups as well as by using repeated subtraction.
Science: Second grade scientists have conducted several experiments with magnets. This week we tested materials to see if a magnet could attract a paper clip through the material. We also began to use bar magnets which have a north pole and a south pole. As we continue this unit, we will learn about many of the properties of magnets.
Second Step: We are continuing to have conversations about problem solving and treating each other kindly. This can be a challenging time of year for many students. As we get ready to end the school year, some children may feel anxious or sad. Unfortunately, this tends to be a time of year where children do not always make the best choices when interacting with each other. Although we are technically done with our Second Step program for the year, we are using this time each week to discuss issues that have come up within the classroom. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you feel that your child is having a particularly hard time as the school year comes to an end.
