Writing: Second graders are continuing to write several poems each day. We took a closer look at structure of poems and learned why certain structures are used for various topics. We began the week by looking at conversation poems and list poems. Later in the week we learned about color poems and we ended the week writing shape poems.
Math: We are continuing to work on multiplication skills and this week we even learned a little bit about division. We connected division to multiplication through fact families. We worked on making rectangular arrays and each made our own array building in our “Array City”, which included the two repeated addition and two multiplication facts to match each array created.
Social Studies: We have begun the My Little Island project. This week, everyone picked a location for their imaginary island on the map. They wrote about what countries or continents are to the north, south, east, and west of their island. They also identified the longitude and latitude coordinates of their islands. Next week will begin the truly creative part of the project where kids get to decide what is on their island!
Conversation Starters:
What was a Red Herring that you found in a mystery book this week?
What is your favorite kind of poem to write? Why?
What is your island’s name? What special things might be on your island?
