- Use a resource (word wall, trick word list)
- Sound it out
- Try it more than one way and choose which one looks right.
At this point in the year, the goal is to be writing as much as possible. We’ve discussed how we quickly choose a strategy to spell a challenging words and then move on and continue writing. Next week we’ll be getting ready to write personal narrative stories. Please help us out by sending back (or emailing) a list of topic ideas for your child if you haven’t done so already. Thank you!
Math: We have built in some fact practice routines to our math choices. Second graders have learned about an app called Xtra math. I sent home log-in information about this. It is not a must do, but is an option if your child is interested. We’ve also learned some new games that incorporate fact practice. Second graders are continuing to work on using number lines in different ways. This week we worked on skip counting and adding larger numbers on number lines.
Fundations: We are currently learning about closed syllable words with bonus letters. Bonus letters are words (or syllables) that end in ff, ll, ss, or zz.
Science: In science we have officially started our unit on trees. We began by learning about sketching like a scientist. We also observed several trees around Newman and determined what all trees have in common. We are lucky to have had such beautiful weather for our outdoor observations!
Second graders are encouraged to follow these steps:
- In a strong, firm voice say “Stop it I don’t like that”
- If the behavior occurs a second time, say “Stop that or I’ll tell a teacher”
- If it happens a third time, go immediately to a teacher.
We read the book Howard B. Wiggle Bottom Learns about Bullies by Howard Binkow to learn about bullying. Each week we’ll read a different book.
Conversation Starters:
What math choices did you make this week?
What is bullying?
Who is your reading partner? How did you work to be a helpful reading partner this week?
