Writing: Thank you to everyone who came to our small moments writing celebration. Second graders loved sharing their stories and we hope you enjoyed listening! Next week I’ll be sending home all writing done in our small moments unit. The past two weeks we have been working on mechanics and grammar. We reviewed rules for capitalization and are working on consistently applying them in our writing. We also learned about the parts of speech of adjective, verb, and noun. We played several games throughout the week to practice these parts of speech such as Scattergories, Charades, and I Spy. During our time with our buddies this week we used our new skills to complete Mad Libs! The photos are of our class playing charades in small table groups.
Science: In science we’ve been working on creating digital books using the app Book Creator. We have been extremely busy in science the past few weeks working on this final project. First, second graders chose a leaf to sketch and then identified that leaf using a tree guide book. We researched facts on our trees and also sketched the seed from each tree. We also found our trees at Newman and took photos to add to our digital books. Second graders could choose to add audio by reading aloud their digital books. I am currently working with Ms. Cantor our tech specialist so that we can share these wonderful projects with families!
Fundations: Our current spelling unit is all about multisyllabic words. We worked on identifying syllables and breaking words apart into syllables.
Second Step: Second graders are learning all about empathy. We have used clues such as facial expressions, body language, and thinking about the situation to figure out how someone is feeling. We also discussed how there are different types of feelings. Some feelings are comfortable feelings like feeling happy, excited, calm and other feelings are uncomfortable feelings such as feeling sad, scared, nervous. We also talked about how feelings change.
Here are some photos from our visit to the food pantry last week. Our class felt proud to bring all of the donations from second graders at Newman to the food pantry.
How can you figure out how many syllables a word has? Show me with the word “fantastic”.
What is something you learned from reading a nonfiction book this week?
What was a challenge or a problem you had to solve while you were creating your digital book about the tree you studied?
