Writing: In writing we’ve continued to work on a variety of strategies for writing poems as well as poetry structures. Second graders have written color, shape, and story poems. Shape poems were a favorite type of poem to write. This entire unit we have actually not written any rhyming poems so we spent a few days this week learning about writing couplets and poems with a rhyme pattern. Now we’re getting ready to publish!
Math: We’ve wrapped up our unit on adding and subtracting larger numbers. Be sure to check your child’s folder for his/her assessment. We are now in the final stretch of second grade as we prepare for third grade. Our next unit is all about understanding multiplication. We connected skip counting and counting groups of objects to the concept of multiplication. We also learned about using rectangular arrays and finding a total by using repeated addition.
Science: We have been busy exploring soil during science. We’ve done experiments to see which soil particle holds the most water. We’ve also used a special tool called a magiscope to get a closer look at the things we are observing. A highlight of the week was observing earthworms!
