Writing: In writing our focus was on trying out different techniques that authors used. The three strategies we incorporated into our writing were sound effect words, making a comparison, and showing, not telling feelings. All of these techniques are powerful because they make stories more interesting to read and give the reader more detail.
Math: We wrapped up our first two units with an assessment. This will come home next week. It assessed working with the number line, combinations to ten, adding and subtracting ten, and making a ten to add. Here are some pictures of the class using a math tool called Versatiles.
Science: Believe it or not, the second grade scientists are learning about photosynthesis! We participated in a reader’s theater (similar to a play, but focused on the lines rather than acting) to learn all about this process. We ended the week by drawing detailed diagrams to show the process of photosynthesis. I was impressed by how the kids were able to grasp this concept and explain it in their own words by the end of the week.
Today was Homecoming day at Newman. We worked on service learning projects in all grade levels today. Second grade will be donating to the Needham Community Council’s Food Pantry throughout the year (more information to be sent home soon). Today we worked with Ms. Teng’s class to create a class book about how people can help people in our community. Here are some photos of us working together today:
Conversation Starters:
Describe the process of photosynthesis? What comes into the leaf first? Next? Last? What happens next.
How can you be helpful to others in the Needham community?
What is an example of a sound effect word?
