Writing: Writers worked to add two different kinds of details to stories this week. Our first writing strategy was sound effects words. We also learned to make our writing impressive by including “Jazzy” words. We learned how to use a thesaurus to look up a word and replace it with a more specific and interesting synonym.
Math: Our current math unit is all about place value. This week we worked on representing two and three digit numbers in different ways. We used the concrete objects of base 10 blocks as well as drawings to represent numbers. We challenged ourselves to write numbers in expanded form, such as 400 + 30 + 5 = 435.
Science: Last week in science we began another experiment to determine either “What will happen when the leaves of a plant do not get sunlight?” or “What will happen when the leaves of a plant do not get air”. Groups worked together to design their own experiments. This week we looked at the results! These experiments helped us to realize that the leaves need both air and sunlight to help the rest of the plant survive. We learned about the process of photosynthesis through a play that kids read in small groups. To show understanding of the process, second graders drew their own models of photosynthesis.
What are the steps of photosynthesis?
How did you help yourself to do your best listening this week?
