Writing: In writing we’re also working on nonfiction. In this unit we’ll be working on information books. I’m already very impressed by the amount of writing that second graders have produced in just a few days of this unit! We are very fortunate to have Mrs. McMackin (literacy coach) joining us four days a week for writing during this unit.
Math: We are continuing to use base 10 blocks and learn more about place value. We have begun working with adding and subtracting two digit numbers. We are using base 10 blocks as well as visuals to help build this skill.
Social Studies: We have finished up our trees unit by each studying an individual tree and creating a poster. These are hanging up in our classroom and will be sent home in a few weeks. Now we are moving on to our social studies curriculum. Our current unit is called “Me on the Map”. In this unit we are learning about our place on the map. We began by learning about where are home is and where our town is. Next week we’ll learn about our state, country, and continent.
Fundations: This week we learned all about the suffix “ed” and the three sounds that it can make as a suffix.
Second Step: We have begun a new unit on Empathy in second step. We are working on using clues to determine how someone is feeling. We are working on using facial expressions, body language, as well as understanding the situation to understand how someone feels.
What is our address? What is the town that we live in?
What three sounds can “ed” make?
What does your face/body look like when you are happy? Sad? Mad?
