Reading: This week was focused on making sure our reading sounds right and correcting ourselves if we make a mistake while reading. This is a very important reading skill that is challenging for many students. Sometimes second graders might make a mistake while reading in their heads, but don’t notice they have made a mistake. Often these are small errors like adding in a sound or leaving off a suffix. We are practicing reading aloud to partners to notice if we read something that doesn’t sound right. Our partners are also there to help point out any errors that were not noticed. Whenever fixing a mistake, we are working on going back and rereading from the start of the sentence.
Writing: We have begun a new unit in writing- persuasive writing. We learned about the difference between facts and opinions. We have also been working on generating reasons to support an opinion and using an organizer called the hamburger organizer to get ready to write a paragraph. The end goal of this unit is for second graders to write a paragraph that includes a topic sentence, three supporting details, and a wrap up sentence. Here is an example of a hamburger organizer that we filled out as a class.
Below is the maps we will be using to track our Flat Characters.
