Reading: Readers worked on noticing interesting words this week. We spent part of the week just identifying and jotting down interesting words. We then learned about how to use context clues to figure out what these new words mean.
Writing: We have finished publishing our how-to books and are looking forward to sharing our stories with you on the 22nd. Our current writing unit is on poetry. The first half of the unit is all about writing free verse poems. We began the unit by looking at different objects from my kitchen and looking at them creatively with a “poet’s eye.” We also began writing poems and used line breaks to create the rhythm in our poems.
Math: Our new math unit is all about time. In second grade it is the goal to be able to tell time to a five minute interval. Second graders are also expected to understand relationships of time such as how many seconds in a minute, days in a week, days in a year, etc..
Social Studies: We learned about the last part of our personal maps- our continent. We are now working on a special project in the tech center using Google Earth to review all that we have learned. We can’t wait to show you the final product!
Fundations: In Fundations we worked on adding new suffixes to single and multisyllabic words. The suffixes were -ment, -ful, -ness, -ish, -able, -en, -less.
Second Step: Our discussion this week was all about what makes a good friend. We made a class book showing the ways we can be good friends to others.
What are context clues? How can you use context clues to figure out what a word means?
Find an object around our house. How can you look at the object with a poet’s eye?
How many seconds are in a minute? Minutes in an hour? Days in a week? Months in a year?
