Reading: Much of our time this year has been spent talking about books, this week was completely focused on writing about books. All second graders used their reading journals this week to answer reading journal prompts using a complete paragraph. This was a great way to review some of the prior work we had done in writing this year. Everyone wrote about a book that was at their own just write level. We’ll continue to work on reading journals next week and will then work in our reading journals about once a week moving forward.
Writing: There are some very creative poets in room 120! We learned all about similes and how these are comparisons using like and as. We also learned about onomatopoeia, which are sound effect words. We have been continuing to work on writing free verse poems.
Math: We had so much fun in math this week creating a survey and then making a pictograph from the data. Pictographs have a key where a symbol represents a certain number of votes. These graphs were a little trickier than creating bar graphs, but we were certainly feeling up for the challenge!
Social Studies: In social studies we worked on using directions on a compass. We will continue to work on this skill next week.
Fundations: This week we worked on using vowel-consonant-e syllables in multisyllabic words.
Second Step: Our lesson in Second Step this week was on asking for help appropriately. We also talked about different options for getting help that we need other than asking a teacher- some examples were asking a classmate, give it your best effort, move on to another problem and go back, and rereading the directions.
Conversation Starters:
What is an example of onomatopoeia?
What is your favorite kind of graph to make? Why?
What is a gift that you can give to someone that doesn’t cost anything?
