Reading: This week we focused on strategies we can try after we stop and sound out a work. One strategy that good readers use is to reread for smooth reading. When taking a very long time to sound out a word, readers also stop and retell what just happened to make sure they are ready to continue reading.
Writing: A favorite activity of the week was writing poems using different voices, or writing poems in different ways from different perspectives. The four ways to write a poem are to tell a story, to use your truest feelings, to write to and object, or to write as an object. We continued to work on using line breaks as we wrote our free verse poems.
Math: We finished up our time unit today. Assessments will go home next week. This week we learned about the difference between AM and PM. We also continued to practice telling time to five minutes. A big focus this week was on telling time when the hour hand is almost at the next hour (such as 2:55). This is one of the trickiest parts of telling time!
Social Studies: We had so much fun in the tech center this week finishing up our Google Earth projects. On Wednesday we added color and transitions between the slides of our presentations.
Fundations: Unit 6 is all about the vowel-consonant-e syllable otherwise known as words with a silent e. This week we focused on single syllable words, next week we’ll combine what we’ve learned in this unit with our other units and practice spelling multisyllabic words.
Second Step: We have begun Unit 2 in second step. This unit focuses on problem solving. The first step to solving a problem is to calm ourselves down. This week we focused on using calming strategies and finding a strategy that works for us. Many second graders felt that taking three deep breaths was the most helpful strategy.
