Reading: Our new unit is all about characters. We began the week by working on character traits and describing the personalities of the characters we’re reading about. We have also began to work on making predictions.
Writing: We have moved onto the second part of our poetry unit. In this part of the unit, we are working on writing structured types of poems. So far we have written acrostic, haiku, and color poems.
Math: In math we have been working on fractions, and doubling and halving numbers. We will continue to review these concepts next week. We learned all about how to write fractions and what the numerator and denominator represent. The focus in second grade is on halves, thirds, and fourths.
Social Studies: The main geography topic that is covered in second grade is called “The Five Themes of Geography”. We learned about the first theme, which is location. We worked on relative location which is describing where a place is located in relation to other places.
Fundations: Our new syllable type is the open syllable. These are syllables that have a long vowel sound at the end of the syllable. We also began learning about how y can be a vowel.
Second Step: In Second Step this week we learned how to apologize appropriately and began talking about making amends. This is a very important concept and we’ll continue to work together to brainstorm ways to make amends when we do something that upsets a classmate.
