This week in book clubs, second graders read the same exact book as the other members in their club. After the break, we will have book clubs where students are reading different books on the same topic to work on the skill of comparing and contrasting.
Writing: Since this was such a short week, instead of jumping into our next non-fiction writing unit, we worked on learning about grammar. We learned about nouns and verbs this week. We played Scattergories to practice identifying nouns.
Math: We are having so much fun learning about two dimensional shapes- this is a very hands on math unit. We used Geoboards and Wikki Stix to make 2-D shapes. By the end of the unit second graders are expected to be able to name and describe triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, and hexagons. A lot of our work this week was focused on the number of sides and angles of a shape.
Science: In science, we explored different toys that use magnets. Here are examples of the toys:
