Writing: Our new writing unit takes some of the previous work done with letter writing and applies it to writing about reading. Specifically, second graders are working on writing letters showing opinions about books. This week we wrote about characters we have strong opinions about and wrote letters to the class. These letters were then put into envelopes and tucked into the books in our library. Second graders are having fun finding a surprise letter in some of the new books they pick to read as it gives them a sneak peak and a classmate’s opinion of the story.
Math: In math we had a very brief unit on three dimensional shapes. We learned about faces (the flat surfaces on a 3 D shape), edges (where two faces meet), and vertices (where three edges meet). We created cubes out of toothpicks and model magic and also created 3D shapes using paper!
Fundations: In Fundations we are learning about double vowel syllables. Our current unit contains the double vowel “ai” and “ay”.
Second Step: We have begun a new unit all about bullying. Our definition of bullying is: When someone does mean things to someone again and again. We talked about how it’s important to let a teacher or trusted adult know if you are being bullied. Each year, whenever the topic of bullying is introduced, kids may confuse conflict with bullying. The important thing to remember is that bullying is repetitive and happens over and over again.
Here are some photos from our field trip to the Natick Organic Farm!
How can you remember the directions on a compass?
Can you find an example of a rectangular prism in our home? How many faces does it have? Edges? Vertices?
