Writing: I shared a story with the kids this week that I wrote when I was about their age. They found it to be hilarious because half of the details were either about me going to sleep or eating. This was a good example of what they should NOT be doing in their stories. We talked about using meaningful details to stretch out a story. We have begun to work on publishing and can’t wait to share our stories with you on the 31st!
Math: In geometry we learned about three dimensional shapes. We finished our paper models, which came home today. We also made models of a cube with toothpicks and model magic. We learned about the parts of 3D shapes, which are faces, edges, and vertices.
Science: We conducted a few experiments on our wet soil particles this week. After adding water to humus, sand, and clay, second graders conducted two tests. One was the streak test- to see if after smudging the material on paper if any color would stay. Another test was the roll test. Everyone loved how the clay, which started as a very fine, dry powder, could roll into a ball when wet.
Fundations: We have wrapped up our study of r controlled syllables. Our next syllable type is the “d” syllable or double vowel syllable. Our first vowel team is ai and ay.
Second Step: In Second Step we began a conversation about tone of voice. We talked about the same sentence can be said in different ways and have different meanings depending on the tone used. Everyone is working to use a kind, friendly tone with classmates and teachers.
Conversation Starters:
What was the most challenging 3D shape to make? What was the easiest for you?
Is the book you are reading an example of a fairy tale? How do you know?
What could you say to someone if you use an unfriendly tone and want to apologize for speaking to them in that way?
