Reading: Second grade readers worked on thinking about a book before reading by looking at the cover, back of the book, and inside. We also continued our thinking while reading and shared a retelling of a story to reading partners using quick sketches on that outlined the big parts of the story.
Writing: We are on our way to finishing up our small moment stories. Each child chose a story to publish this week and much of our time was spent fixing our stories up. We have revised our stories and added details, transition words, and thoughts and feelings. We also worked on editing our stories and checking for capitalization and punctuation. Finally, we learned how to use the dictionary to look up the spelling of words. This was a new skill for many students and one that we’ll continue to practice throughout the year.
Math: In math we worked on adding and subtracting multiples of ten. We also used the strategy of making a ten to quickly solve addition problems. Our problem solving strategy in this unit was “solving a simpler problem”.
Science: We learned about the main parts of the tree and what job each part has. Next week we’ll learn about the parts inside a tree.
Fundations: We finished up our unit on closed syllables with digraphs and blends. We have begun our next unit on bonus letters that come at the ends of words - ff, ll, ss.
