Writing: In writing we are busy writing stories and establishing our writer’s workshop routines. As we launch writer’s workshop, kids can write any kind of story.
Math: The first days of math are spent on putting our math routines in place and reviewing concepts taught in first grade. Some concepts we have reviewed so far are: skip counting, adding and subtracting on the number line, and adding ten and multiples of ten.
Fundations: Fundations is our phonics program. So far we are working on assessing first grade trick words to make sure that we remember the spelling of these words that cannot be sounded out. Once a week we will be having academic choice time in which kids will practice words in our current unit by making a choice of how they will practice. This week’s choices were: wikki stix, oil pastels, or write the words into a story. Everyone is very excited about academic choice time in Fundations. Here are some pictures from this week’s academic choice time:
Another thing we have worked on since the start of school have been writing our hopes and dreams. In order to make our hopes and dreams happen, we established rules for our classroom. Our class rules that we decided on are:
Listen to others.
Take care of each other and materials.
Be safe and have a calm body.
Keep a positive attitude so we can have a happy year.
As we ease back into a full school day, we have been having a morning recess as well as regular second grade recess. Here are some photos from our extra recess time!

Conversation Starters:
What choice did you make during academic choice in Fundations? Did you like your choice?
How do you know if a book is just right for you?
How can you add ten to a number quickly (without counting by 1’s)?
