Reading: We continued to build our reading stamina this week. Kids are working to record their reading in a reading binder. To begin, kids will use a tally mark system to record each book they read, later we will transition to recording titles of books. Mrs. Lansdale also taught us about “just right” books.
Writing: Much of our writing work this week was related to strategies for spelling words. We focused on two main strategies: sounding out and using words around the room to help with spelling. The goal in second grade right now is to give the spelling of tricky words a good try and then move on.
Math: In math we are working on using the number line to show adding and subtraction. We are also working on skip counting using a number line. Second graders have also enjoyed playing math games when they are done with their lesson activity book pages.
Science: We began our unit on trees. Our main focus this week was on sketching. We will sketch the same tree throughout the year.
Fundations: We have begun our first Fundations unit which focused on single syllable words with short vowel sounds.
Second Step: We learned about what a whole body listener looks like and have practiced showing whole body listening throughout each lesson each day.
Conversation Starters:
How do you know if a book is “just right”?
What is your favorite story you have written in writer’s workshop?
Tell me about one of the math games that is in your classroom.
How is a sketch different from a drawing?
What are the five parts of whole body listening?
Looking forward to seeing you at Curriculum Night on the 17th!
