Writing: We have been busy revising, editing, and publishing nonfiction stories. Second graders are so excited to share their nonfiction writing with you at our celebration next Thursday! Our next writing unit will be writing fictional stories.
Math: Second graders have been studying data collection and graphing. We have learned how to make picture graphs and bar graphs. An important skill in this unit is being able to answer questions about data and graphs. Many of these questions are comparison question such as “How many more ______ than ________?” or “How many fewer_____ than _____?”. When making graphs, second graders are paying attention to writing a title and labels before graphing the data.
Science: Science is back on our schedule! We have been studying magnets and have done several experiments to explore and determine properties of magnets. Some experiments include answering the questions “What objects will attract to a magnet?”, “Through what objects can a magnet attract a paperclip?”, and “Are all magnets the same strength? Does the size of a magnet determine its strength?”. Here are some photos of second graders participating in these experiments.
Second Step: We have been learning all about bullying behavior. Bullying behavior is defined as when someone is purposefully mean (with words or physical actions) to someone over and over again. We have discussed the difference between conflict and bullying and that bullying is repetitive rather than a problem that occurred just one time. When dealing with bullying we have practiced using the steps of saying in a strong, firm voice “Stop it I don’t like that”, if the behavior occurs a second time, saying “Stop that or I’ll tell a teacher” and then if it happens a third time, going to a teacher. We have also talked about how some circumstances in which we feel very uncomfortable or unsafe, we need to go to a teacher immediately.
