Writing: Our new writing unit is many moment stories. Tomie DePaola is acting as our mentor author in this unit. This week was focused on writing with detail and showing, not telling feelings. We also worked on interesting beginnings.
Math: In math we worked on problem solving. This was some very challenging work this week with multi step problems, missing parts, and A LOT of information in many of the problems we solved. Children challenged themselves to be as independent as possible with this work.
Science: We are having so much fun studying soil in science. This week was spent looking at soil samples and observing and classifying the different things found within the sample. It’s too bad there is SO much snow on the ground, but luckily the science center has provided us with plenty of materials to use until the snow melts.
Fundations: In Fundations we are continuing to study r-controlled syllables. In this current unit, er, ir, and ur all make the same sound. We talked about how to try out the spelling of a word three different ways to see which one looks right if you’re not sure of the spelling.
Second Step: We are continuing to work on being a kind and caring classmate to everyone. We read the book One, by Kathryn Otoshi which is a great story to remind us the importance of standing up for others.
Conversation Starters:
How did you begin your many moment story?
What did the soil you observe look like? Smell like? Feel like?
What character did you write about in reading? What kind of project did you make?
