Writing: Second grade writers worked on making their writing “jazzy” by replacing words with more interesting words. Some examples of this are replacing the word “big” with the word “enormous” or replacing the word “said” with “shouted”.
Math: In math this week we used base 10 blocks. We began by representing 2 digit numbers in different ways, then 3 digit numbers. We also learned about expanded form (showing a number broken down by place value- 400 + 20 + 6 = 426). At the end of the week we began to talk about regrouping. This will later help support work with double and triple digit addition and subtraction .
Fundations: We have been learning about suffixes. We have added the suffixes s, es, ing, ed, est, and er onto basewords
Science: We reviewed the main parts of the tree and designed and created tree models this week. Be sure to have your child tell you all about his/her tree model and the job of each part of the tree!
Second Step: In Second Step we talked about how people have different preferences sometimes. We might want to play a certain game, but a friend doesn’t feel like playing that game at that moment. We talked about how this doesn’t mean that someone doesn’t want to be friends with you, it just means they don’t want to play that particular game at that time. We continued to work on understanding how someone is feeling based on their body clues.
Conversation Starters:
What is an example of a “jazzy” (more interesting) word for happy? Cold? Small?
How were you a good reading partner this week? How was your partner helpful to you?
