Writing: Room 120 is full of amazing poets. I am constantly impressed by the poetic language these second graders are using in their writing! We’ve worked on using techniques such as alliteration, repetition, and writing with a comparison to make our writing sound more poetic. Additionally, we’ve written in different structures such as acrostic poems, haiku, conversation, and list poems.
Math: Before the break we learned all about three digit addition and subtraction. We first began by using the cross number puzzles to solve these problems. We reviewed this a bit after the break and then worked on adding and subtracting by adding the hundreds, tens, and ones. For example thinking about 365 + 485 as 365 + 400= 765, 765 + 80= 845, and finally 845 +5 = 850. Many kids have worked on doing this math in their head.
Science: Second grade have continued to enjoy hands on exploration during our science unit on soil. We’ve explored both wet and dry soil particles called sand, clay, and humus. Here are some pictures of an experiment we did where we tested to see how quickly water would go through these three samples.
Fundations: We are currently studying words with the long o sound. OE, OA, and OW can make this sound.
Second Step: We have been focusing on problem solving during recess. As we continue to practice our problem solving steps in the classroom with realistic situations, the hope is that second graders become more and more independent with the problem solving process when a problem occurs.
Here are some photos of our chilly (but still fun) drop everything and read time:
Who are your new reading and writing partners? How have you worked to be a good partner to him/her?
How did you work cooperatively with others during science this week?
