Math: We are continuing to strengthen our understanding of place value in math. A big skill we worked on over the last few two weeks is the concept of regrouping. Regrouping is when a number is represented with more than 9 tens and/or more than 9 ones. So for instance 41 represented as 3 tens and 11 ones. Regrouping means that we would trade 10 of those ones for a ten so that we can represent 41 as 4 tens and 1 one. We will continue to practice this skill in our next unit as we get ready to add and subtract larger numbers.
Science: Second graders shared the results of their science experiment on leaves and we learned that the leaves have the job of taking in air and sunlight. We also have begun to further explore different types of leaves and trees. We collected leaves around Newman to sort and categorize. We learned that scientists have two categories for leaves which are broadleaf and needleleaf. Second graders also learned how to identify what type of tree a leaf comes from using a guide.
Second Step: In Second Step, we have started a unit all about empathy. Our lessons are based on videos or photographs depicting various situations. We are using clues on someone’s face, their body, and thinking about the situation in order to determine how someone is feeling. We’ve discussed how some feelings are “comfortable” feelings and others are “uncomfortable” feelings. We also recognize that feelings can change.
We also met our fifth grade buddies! Here are some photos of us working on buddy venn diagrams to find out our similarities and differences.
What were the results of your leaf experiment? How did your plant compare to the plant that had been in the sunlight and air?
What does it mean to show empathy?
